Module Descriptions

In keeping with the philosophy of Free-mo and the endeavours of the members of Coldslap Free-mo, there are some modules owned by Coldslap Free-mo and other modules owned privately. Following are descriptions of all the modules, arranged by owner(s). Please refer to our Module Specifications document for details. Clicking on the photograph will take you to the external PDF document. Clicking on the name will open the document within this web site.

Coldslap Free-mo

Click to open Coldslap Yard
Coldslap Yard was the module set that began it all. The original group members combined resources, skills, and talents to construct the six section classification yard, as the fundamental piece in any layout design. The project was too big for one person to undertake, hence the team effort. The group continues to develop and refine the scenery, in the hope that some day it will be complete. Later on, James the steam afficionado constructed the add-on roundhouse section that attaches to the Coldslap West yard throat.
Click to open Coldslap 221
Coldslap 221 was constructed to create a one track to two track conversion module. The turnout is operated by a Smail. The module is fully signalled using Model Railroad Signal Systems circuit boards and BLMA signal masts.
Click to open Muzzup
Muzzup is a mini-mo constructed to create a bridge between the two halves of Coldslap Yard, when the yard was split into two stub-ended yards. Now Muzzup is more often used as a switching lead out of Coldslap West. To provide a more scenic end to the two tracks, a short Tracksend module has been built. Mini-mos are specified in the standards as acceptable, but not preferred. They serve particular purposes when a standard-sized module is not available.
Click to open Twotoone
Twotoone (2-2-knee) is a mini-mo constructed to create a one track to two track conversion module. The turnout is operated by a Hare, and will align itself correctly to avoid a train running into its points.
Click to open Abbey
Abbey is a single track module, built to create some running space between adjacent modules. The scenery is essentially trees and bush. It has a modest bend of 22.5 degrees. The track is detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Zephyr
Zephyr is a single track module, built to create some running space between adjacent modules. The scenery is essentially trees and bush. It has a modest bend of 22.5 degrees; it is the mirror image of Abbey. The track is detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Hardor
Hardor is actually 3 electrically independent loops, preceded by a double crossover turnout section. The main line is the innermost loop. Each loop has a PSX-AR reverser to allow up to three trains to cross the gaps without interferring with each other. The module has a small city surrounding the double crossover, with a campground adjacent and industrial spurs and warehouses opposite. The module was built by one of our founding members, Harry Huizing. Unfortuantely, Harry passed away in March 2020, but his wife Doris was generous enough to donate it to Coldslap Free-mo.

Dick Hawkshaw and Harry Southern

Click to open Chemchill
Chemchill was created by Dick and Harry to provide some operational activity to the layout. The three section module set forms a 90 degree corner, with the main viewing and operating side being on the "outside" of the curve. The module provides a single main line through its centre, with a passing siding, plus an oil tanker handling and a lumber reloading facility on its industrial spurs. The module is fully signalled using Model Railroad Signal Systems circuit boards and BLMA signal masts.

James Hill

Click to open Isaac Junction
Isaac Junction is a single track module, with a modest bend. In the town area, its 1950s scene includes a gas station and a country store with an addition under construction. The commercial area has an ice house and supply, served by an industrial spur. There is branch line heading off the opposite side of the module. James' intention was to build an interface to a narrow gauge operation.

Jamea Lister

Click to open Lister Cement
Lister Cement is a single to double track conversion module, constructed in two pieces. On one side of the tracks is a dairy and hog farm and on the other side is a cement plant. The cows can be heard to moo at the push of a button.
Click to open Southern Rail Bridge
Southern Rail Bridge is a single track module, with the rail crossing over a four-lane highway. The track is detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.

Larry and Lori Sebelley

Click to open Cormel
Cormel is named after the Sebelley's two daughters, Cory and Melissa. It is a double track module, depicting a corner store/restaurant/gas station, a residence, and a small passenger station. An automatic grade crossing circuit powers the two crossing signal mast lights and bells on each side of the road. The two tracks are independently detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Packer's Pond
Packer's Pond is a double track module, depicting a hiking/horse trail around a very small lake. A couple have pitched their tent near their camp fire. On the opposite side, Hereford cattle graze contentedly. The two tracks are independently detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Vanville
Vanville was inspired by the trip to NMRA Anahein Special 2008 in California. Along the way the Sebelleys stayed in Railroad Park at Dunsmuir, California. A diner provides succulent fare to the overnight guests and other visitors. The guests enjoy the pool, the playground, and watching trains pass by. Its single track follows a fairly tight radius curve, requiring a "slow order" from the Dispatcher. The single track is detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Aidak River
Aidak River is a double track module named after the Sebelley's first two grandchildren, Aidin and Akeyla. It has a steel bridge over a river canyon and was completed in January 2015. Birds can be heard flying over the river below. The two tracks are independently detected, providing signalling data to the signal bus.
Click to open Kingsport
Kingsport is a two to one module, inspired by Kingsgate BC and Eastport ID and the international border between. The module is fully signalled using Model Railroad Signal Systems circuit boards and BLMA signal masts.
Click to open Beavells
Beavells is a two to one module, depicting the railway running accross what was once a river, but the roadbed has stopped the flow of water. A family of beavers has taken the opportunity to create a home on one side of the tracks. Humans have created a camping, swimming, and boating area on the other side of the track. The module is fully signalled using Model Railroad Signal Systems circuit boards and BLMA signal masts.
Click to open Sashamo
Sashamo is a double track module, named after the Sebelley's latest grandson. Its four single head signal masts create a signal district junction. The module is fully signalled using Model Railroad Signal Systems circuit boards and BLMA signal masts.

Chris Reid

Click to open Criss Cross
Criss Cross was was constructed by our newest member, Chris Reid. It is a double track module with a hand-laid double crossover in the middle. The double crossover was made using a Fast Tracks jig and supplies.
